Green Production Range: Cellulose Acetate Film

Goodfellow’s Green Production Range is dedicated to using environmentally sound products and processes that conserve energy and the natural resources of our planet. We believe in fuelling innovation whilst fostering sustainability and so created a range of products that do just that. By using green materials, you can help to reduce the impact that non-renewable materials have on the environment (find out more info on our range here!)

The material we’re focusing on today is Cellulose Acetate Film, a non-petroleum-based plastic. This thermoplastic is manufactured from purified cellulose and is a transparent, amorphous, glossy material.

Cellulose Acetate Film properties

  • Non-toxic
  • Industrially and home compostable
  • Good clarity and low haze
  • Moderate UV stability
  • Chemical resistance
  • Biodegradable
  • Recyclable
  • Easy to cut and tear
  • High moisture vapour transmission
  • Low water permeability

How is it made?

Starting with Cellulose, the natural ingredient comes from two sources, which are wood pulp or cotton fibres. These raw materials are then processed using Acetic Anhydride or Acetic Acid, with Sulfuric Acid as a catalyst when cotton fibres are used.
